It has always been one of my favourite slots
in the festival, I am one of many who is addicted
to the annual pleasure of booking a ticket for
about which I know absolutely nothing. For
the uninitiated, the ritual starts with the
growing sense of excitement as the Savoy
auditorium fills, the last minute suggestions
placed in the festival competition, followed
by the gasps which accompany trailers which
kick off the proceedings. Then the lights dim
and the opening credits are revealed…
In keeping with JDIFF tradition, the Surprise
Film has not been selected as we go to print
with the festival programme. One of the most
eagerly anticipated presentations in the line-up,
it is usually first to sell out and the source
of constant conversation thoughout the run
up to the festival and for the duration of the
event itself.
My lips are sealed as to what films I am hoping
to confirm for this cherished slot, but I can tell
you this, don’t listen to anyone who tells you
that they know what the Surprise Movie is.
It is the festivals most closely guarded secret
and no one will know until the lights dim…
Enjoy
