“My films aspire to the condition of documentary. If you’re
a newsreel cameraman and you go and shoot a real event, you
know that a world exists whether you film it or not. What I want
to do is create a world with that kind of solidity to it, something
so three-dimensional and solid you could cut it with a knife.” —
Mike Leigh.
One of Britain’s most acclaimed and revered directors, Mike
Leigh has made his mark with his depictions of the real-life
dramas inherent in the day-to-day lives of regular people.
Leigh is renowned for making films which shy away from
Hollywood-style mawkish sentimentality and instead offer
a more level-headed approach.
A Mike Leigh comedy, Happy-Go-Lucky is set in contemporary
London and follows the adventures of Poppy (Sally Hawkins)
a primary school teacher. A free spirit, she is open and generous –
as funny and anarchic as she is focused and responsible.
*We are delighted Mike Leigh and lead actor Sally Hawkins
will attend the screening and will participate in a post screening
discussion hosted by filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson.
