Showing as part of the festival’s Music on
Film season, the World Premiere of Dambe,The Mali Project is a fascinating
musical journey through modern day Africa.
Described by Bono as is “the best white soul
singer in the world”, Liam O’Maonlai’s musical
talents also encompass the bódhran, tin
whistle and piano. Alongside the global success
of Hothouse Flowers, O’Maonlai remained true
to his traditional roots and his native language.
In 2006, he teamed up with famed Uillean
Piper Paddy Keenan to travel to a number of
music events in Mali, culminating in a unique
performance at the world’s most remote music
festival – ‘Festival au Desert’. Himself and
Paddy played with musicians from the greater
region from very well known artists to local
tribes people. Along their journey they meet
and collaborate with musicians ranging from
Grammy award winners to nomadic herders.
Director Dearbhla Glynn and producer Vanessa
Gildea have created a wonderfully authentic
portrait of these traveling players, their endless
curiosity about music and the musicians they
meet, and their truly extraordinary musical
ability is both inspiring and quietly humbling.
